Biography
Born in Montevideo, Juan Carlos Valls started studying vocal technique at the Escuela Nacional de Arte Lirico in Uruguay with Maria Virginia Castro. Later he continued taking private clases with Maestro Juan Carlos Gebelin.
In 1994 , he won first prize at the Juventudes Musicales of Uruguay and continued his studies in Buenos Aires with Maestros Ricardo Yost and Renato Sassola (both from the city´s Colon Theatre), and later carried on training with Maestro Vittorio Terranova in Milan, Italy.
Back in his country he has performed in numerous productions as Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Carmen, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) and Romeo and Juliet.
He was the main performer at the premier of G.Conizetti´s Requiem in Uruguay, also performed in G.Schicchi´s Jeanne d' Arc au Bûcher (Joan of Arc at the Stake), Fidelio (Jacquino), Lucia di Lammermoor, Rossini´s Stabat Mater and Dvôrak´s Stabat Mater, Ravel´s L´Enfant et les Sortiléges (The Child and the Spells), Alfred´s role in J.Strauss Jr.´s Die Fledermaus (The Bat) and A.Estevez´s La Cantata Criolla. Most of these performances were directed by Patron Marchand.
His international career started in 1997 when he was called to perform the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata in the Municipal Theatre in Santiago de Chile.
For the South American premier of G.Verdi´s Il Corsaro at the Roma Theatre in Buenos Aires, he performed the main role as Corrado.
Soon after that he traveled to Italy where he debuted at Milan´s Duomo Cathedral singing Gounod's Saint Cecilia´s Mass and Rossini´s La Preghiera del Moisés. The Italian soprano Katia Ricciarelli also sang at this concert.
After auditioning with numerous other participants, he was chosen to perform the role of M.Cavaradossi in G.Puccini´s Tosca in Cantu, Varese, Italy.
Later he was chosen as the sole tenor to represent Buenos Aires´ Colon Theatre at the V Maria Callas International Competition which took place at Busseto, Italy.
He opened the opera season at the Petruzzelli Theatre in Bari. Italy, playing the role of the Duca di Mantova in Verdi´s Rigoletto, a role which he has subsequently performed on several different occasions; in Jesi and Fermo, both in Italy, and also at the Teresa Carreño Theatre in Caracas, Venezuela.
He debuted in the role of Arturo in V.Bellini´s I Puritani at the G.Verdi Theatre in the city of Trieste, Italy, and continued with the same role in the Wielki Theatre of Lodz in Poland for two consecutive years with excellent reviews.
In 2002 he performed as Alfredo Germont in Verdi´s La Traviata in Montevideo, Uruguay.
His London debut came in a concert at the prestigious Saint John´s, Smith Square accompanied on the piano by the renowned pianist Vincent Scalera, who was also staff pianist to Tenor Jose Carreras, when he sang arias from various different operas, and works by E.Fabini, C.L.Cluzeau Mortet and Guastavino.
He debuted at the important Massimo Theatre in Palermo, Italy, in the role of Porcus in the opera Joan of Arc at the Stake by Honegger, under the direction of Daniele Abbado.
Continued with performances in the city of Bogota, Colombia, playing the role of Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor by G.Donizetti, and Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto. and in other performances in Lima, Peru, and Quito, Ecuador.
Interpreted Beethoven´s Ninth Symphony as well as the Peruvian opera Ollanta by J.Valle Riestra, in Lima, Peru, where he played the lead role of Ollanta. This opera had been absent from the stage for eighty-three years.
He has performed several concerts within the Spanish show Anthology of Zarzuela in countries like Poland and Puerto Rico, in the cities of Bydgoszcz and the T.Fine Arts of San Juan.
In 2004 he played the role of the Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto, at the Municipal Theatre in Santiago de Chile, under the direction of the renowned Italian Maestro Maurizio Benini.
Debuted in the role of Hoffmann in M.Kayes´s version of Offenbach´s Tales of Hoffmann in the Bogota Opera, Colombia.
Invited to participate in a concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Jose Cura, where he received an excellent reception from both public and critics.
In December 2005 he appeared at the Municipal Theatre in Santiago de Chile in the role of Edgardo in Donizetti´s Lucia di Lammermoor to excellent reviews by both audiences and critics. On that occasion he was directed by the renowned Maestro Emilio Sagi (former artistic director of the Real Theatre in Madrid).
Continued at the prestigious Concert Hall Thessaloniki, Greece, playing the role of Arturo in Bellini's I Puritani under the direction of the renowned Italian Maestro Giuliano Carella.
He returned to the Municipal Theatre in Santiago de Chile to play the role of Cassio in G.Verdi´s Otello, under the direction of Maestro Roberto Rizzi-Brignoli in an international cast which included the famous soprano Veronica Villarroel.
In August 2006 , at the Solis Theatre in Montevideo, Uruguay, during the opera season to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the theatre, he achieved great acclaim with his enormously successful performance of the role of M.Cavaradossi in Puccini´s Tosca.
He participated in the 2007 New Year´s Eve concert at the Opera House in Krakow, Poland.
In January 2007 he played the role of the Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto at the Grand National Opera Theatre in Warsaw (Wielki Theatre-Poland) in a La Scala production under the direction of Maestro Tiziano Severini.
He performed Beethoven´s Ninth Symphony in the city of Palermo, Italy at the Politeama Theatre with the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Alberto Veronesi in the opening concert of the symphony season.
He was once again called by the Bern Opera to play the role of Alfredo Germont in La Traviata in a major new production from January to June of 2007, to much critical acclaim.
Returned to the Solis Theatre in Montevideo, Uruguay in August 2007 with the role of the Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto.
In November 2007 he played the role of Rodolfo in Puccini´s La Boheme in Sinaloa, Mazatlan, Mexico.
Also in November 2007 he stared in the world premiere of Requiem in Memoriam of John Paul II, written by Uruguayan composer Mº.Carlos Aznarez in Montevideo´s Metropolitan Cathedral.
He began the year 2008 in the role of M.Cavaradossi in Tosca with the Dijon Opera, France.
He played the role of Don Jose in Bizet´s Carmen at the Opera in Guatemala in June 2008.
In August 2008 , he took the role of Rodolfo in La Boheme with the Bogota Opera, Colombia.
Also at the Fine Arts Theatre in Bogota he played the role of Pinkerton in Puccini´s Madam Butterfly.
In October 2008 , he was invited by the tenor Luigi Alva to play the role of Pinkerton in Madam Butterfly in Lima, Peru, and to take part in a tribute concert to the tenor Luigi Alva together with the famous mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza.
In December of that same year he took part in a concert with the Symphony Orchestra of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In 2009 he was invited to play the role of Alfredo Germont in Verdi´s La Traviata,which he performed in a range of theatres including: Teatro Nuovo de Salsomaggiore, Fidenza, G.Magnani Theatre, Fidenza and Teatro Comunale di Carpi, Modena. This hugely successful Italian tour was undertaken with the renowned baritone Roberto Serville in the role of Giorgio Germont, and was very well received by audiences and critics alike.
His commitments for 2009 included:

- Alfredo Germont in La Traviata - El Circulo Theatre in Rosario, Argentina.
- Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor - Argentino Theatre, Mar del la Plata, Argentina.
- Duca di Mantova in Rigoletto - Pablo de Villavicencio Theatre, Culiacan, Mexico and Angela Peralta Theatre, Mazatlan, Mexico.
- Luciano Pavarotti tribute concert at the El Circulo Theatre in Rosario, Argentina.
- Lyric Gala at the Solis Theatre in Montevideo, Uruguay under the direction of Maestro Federico Garcia Vigil.
Whilst the Colon Theatre in Buenos Aires was being reconstructed, he interpreted Beethoven´s Ninth Symphony with the theatre´s permanent chorus and orchestra.
In 2010 , he was invited to participate in the opera Lucia di Lammermoor in the role of Edgardo, at the Solis Theatre in Montevideo, Uruguay, the opera Rigoletto in the role of Duca di Mantova at the Municipal Theatre of Santiago de Chile, for the reopening season of the Colon Theatre in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he participated in J.Massenet´s Manon in the role of Chevalier Des Grieux, and he also sang Beethoven´s Ninth Symphony at the Cetennial Park, a production by the Colon Theatre of Buenos Aires,Argentina with orchestra and chorus.
Also in 2010 , he interpreted the role of Rodolfo in La Boheme, which was his American debut, performing in Meridian, Mississippi and in the cities of Slidell and New Orleans, Louisiana.
In 2011 , he participated in the opera Lucia di Lammermoor in the role of Edgardo, held at the El Circulo Theatre in Rosario, Argentina. Later he played the role of M.Cavaradossi in the opera Tosca. He toured Spain and France and also sang in the prestigious New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv playing the role of Alfredo Germont in Verdi´s La Traviata in June-July 2011 . Later he was invited to give a series of concerts in New Orleans.
He started the year 2012 with an invitation to play Rodolfo in the opera La Boheme on a tour that took him to Bulgaria, Spain and France. He also played Chevalier des Grieux in Massenet´s Manon at the Bogota Opera, Colombia and Don Jose in a performance of Bizet´s Carmen which he toured Bulgaria, Spain and France. In June at the El Libertador San Martin Theatre, Cordoba, Argentina, he played the role of Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor. He was also invited as the sole singer to perform a special tribute to renowned tenor Luigi Alva in Lima, Peru. In September he gave a concert at the Catamarca Cultural Centre, Argentina.
2013 will see him again playing the role of the Duca di Mantova at the El Circulo Theatre in Rosario, Argentina. Then he will tour Bulgaria, Spain and France with the role of Alfredo Germont in La Traviata.
He will also sing in a concert at the Sodre Theatre in Montevido, Uruguay, dedicated entirely to Verdi, along with other international singers. He will also perform in a mega concert in Catamarca, Argentina where he will be giving a masterclass.
In November 2013 , he is called to sing in a Gala tribute to G. Verdi in Biarritz, France.
In January 2014 he will be singing the role of Alfredo Germont in La Traviata at the opera of Massy in Paris, France.
He has been called by the Theatre El Circulo in Rosario (Argentina) to play the Pinkerton role in M. Butterfly in April 2014.
In May 2014, he will play the role of Rodolfo in G.Puccini´s opera La Bohème at the Adela Reta Hall in the Sodre Theatre in Montevideo, Uruguay.
Due to his success in La Boheme, the Auditorio Nacional of the Sodre Theatre in Montevideo(Uruguay) has once again called upon him to sing the difficult role of Don Jose in G.Bizet´s opera Carmen in October/November 2014.
He has been called by the Theatre El Circulo in Rosario(Argentina), to sing the role of Fausto in C.Gounod's Fausto in May 2015.
The El Circulo Theatre in Rosario (Argentina) has once again called him to sing the role of Alfredo en La Traviata in July 2015, and he will sing this same role at the Provincial Theatre in Salta (Argentina) in August 2015.
Jefferson Perfoming Arts Center has invited him to sing the rol of the duke of Mantua in Verdi´s Rigoletto in October 2015.
The Argentino Theatre in La Plata (Argentina) has invited him to sing the role of Rodolfo in Puccini´s la Bohème in November/December 2015.
In Feb/March 2016 he will be singing the role of the duke of Mantua in Rigoletto, invited by Opera 2001 for their tour Bulgary-Spain-France.
In October 2016, he will be singing the role of Alfredo in La Traviata at the Sodre Theatre in Montevideo.
Opera 2001 has invited him to sing the role of RODOLFO in LA BOHEME in their Spain/France tour in October/November 2016 and the role of MARIO CAVARADOSSI in TOSCA in February/March 2017.
In September 2017 JUAN CARLOS was invited to sing in a concert at the Macció Theatre in San José(Uruguay).
In October 2017 he will sing in La Boheme at the El Círculo Theatre in Rosario (Argentina).
In February 2019 he was called upon to sing in a lyric concert, Summer Classics, with the Montevideo Philharmonic Orchestra.
In May 2019 he was awarded the golden Estrella del Sur for his international career. The ceremony took place at the Sheraton Hotel in Montevideo.
In June 2019 he was called upon to sing Uruguay’s National Hymn for the opening of the Second Summit “Culture and Peace” at the Hall of the “Passos Perdidos” at the Legislative Palace in Montevideo, where he was awarded a diploma as Cultural Personality by the Representative Chamber of Uruguay and UMECEP.
